3000 schools to discuss the enlargement and future of Europe
Author: Chris Coakley

On 19 February 2004 Siegerland-Grundschule in Berlin, Germany became the 3000th school to register for Spring Day in Europe. Schools have been registering at rate of over 40 a day since another German school became the 2000th school to register less than a month ago. Spring Day in Europe is an event for schools to learn more about their European neighbours and debate the future of Europe.

This year, the key date for schools’ activities is 23 March 2004.

Spring Day in Europe has a special focus on the enlargement in 2004 and many schools in EU member states are organising joint activities with partner schools in adhesion countries.

As in 2003 many local, national and European figures are visiting schools or taking part in online chats to face pupils’ questions and debate European issues. President Iliescu of Romania, EU Environment Commissioner Wallström, and several MEPs are amongst those who have confirmed their participation.

Giorgios Katiforis MEP will be visiting a school in Dionysus, Athens. He said:

"It is important for young people in Europe to be aware as soon as possible of their European citizenship, which is assuming ever greater importance alongside their national citizenship."

Spring Day in Europe has a special connection with the United Nations’ Earth Day this year. Schools across Europe will join the United Nations’ tradition of ringing a bell for peace.

Spring Day in Europe is organised by European Schoolnet, with the support of the European Commission’s DG for Enlargement.
